Production 2008 : The Gondoliers
General Savoyards Information Penzance The Gondoliers or The King of Barataria was Gilbert & Sullivan's twelfth successful collaboration and is full of all the things for which they are famous: comic characters, impossible plot twists, light but pointed social comment, witty dialogue and lyrics, and irresistibly singable music.

When Gilbert was preparing The Gondoliers he was so annoyed by the complaints of company members that they did not have big enough parts, and so angry at one principal in particular who demanded a higher salary for her contributions to the success of the operas, that he declared, "I'll write an opera in which there will be no principal parts!". In fact he wrote an opera in which the principal parts were nearly equal, in length and memorability. It seems appropriate, then, that the main theme of the piece is equality. Marco and Giuseppe hope to operate a monarchy on republican principals, so "all shall equal be." But this plan fails. In the world of Gilbert and Sullivan, success went to those who recognised and abided by the "natural" hierarchy of classes. To treat everyone equally was a comic idea for Gilbert; as Don Alhambra points out, "When everybody is somebody, then no one's anybody." In the end, monarchy, and therefore order and balance, are restored.

The Gondoliers premiered at the Savoy Theatre on the 7th December, 1889, and ran for 554 performances, closing on June 20, 1891. Now 119 years after its premier this operetta is to be performed by the Hull Savoyards.

Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri, the most favored of all the gondoliers, choose Gianetta and Tessa to be their brides. While celebrating their marriages, Marco and Giuseppe are informed that one of them is really the King of Barataria - but it is not known which. Gianetta and Tessa are delighted with the idea of one of them being Queen. However, all are cast into despair when it is revealed that the King was married (in babyhood) to someone else!

We have performed at retirement dinner functions, funerals and in prison. We are now in the process of taking live music into schools and had an extremely successful morning recently at Market Weighton. One aim of the Society is to keep the theatre and live music active in the community.
